step 3. batteries

Step 3.

Next you'll mount the battery pack. For this you will use spacers and two bolts. My gearhead motors were 5/8", so I purchased two #8 3/4" aluminum spacers. In order to mount the battery pack, find the center of the lower platform (it would be wise to mark this line, or score it.) Then place the battery pack up to the platform (making sure all four corners stay inside the disc, and account for the placement of the motor mounts.) Making sure it's centered on the platform, mark where the bolts will go (using the slots that are in the battery holder) with a permanent marker.

After drilling the holes, I stuck a #6 1 1/2" round head bolt throught the platform, through the spacer and the battery holder. You might not have this problem depending on what motors you use, but the bolts were about 1/4" too long, and they blocked the loading of the batteries. To solve this I just used a pair of pliers with a cutting section. You may have to use a hammer to help cut the bolt, or you might be able to use your bare hands. After cutting the bolt, it'll be a bit hard to turn the nut onto the bolt - so you'll have to use those pliers again and a screwdriver to force the nut on.
